National Dot Day!

Today we celebrated National Dot Day by reading the story The Dot by Peter Reynolds. We did a dot greeting, painted dots (like in the book) and even got invited to a celebration with cookies in Mrs. Davison's kindergarten class! We got to show off our paintings, watch a video of other students creating dots, and share a snack.

Fly Away, Monarch Butterflies!

Our monarchs hatched out of the chrysallis over the weekend, and we let them go yesterday morning. The kids all stood around watching, although it was chilly and windy and the butterflies did not seem very excited to go anywhere! One hung out on Jacob's pant leg for a while, then we decided to "give them some space" and come back inside :)

Gingerbread Cookies!

Throughout the week we have read many versions of "The Gingerbread Boy" fairy tale. This morning we made gingerbread cookies, but when we went to get them out of the oven, they had run away just like in the story! We followed them all over the school, finding notes telling us where to go next (a great way to tour the school and show them where certain places are!!). The kids had a blast, and we finally found the cookies back in our classroom and ate them before they could get away.

Dice Roll

This afternoon while we rotated through stations, children learned how to play the "Dice Roll" game. Basically, you keep rolling the dice until one number reaches the top!

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

As part of our beginning unit on Monarch Butterflies (we have two caterpillars in the room that have formed their cocoons!) each child will be illustrating their own copy of The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. Today each child made a cover by cutting out circles and gluing them down. They are VERY adorable!

Guided Discovery with Scissors

As part of the Responsive Classroom philosophy, we have been doing "guided discovery" with many different things throughout our class and day. This includes the children brainstorming how to use something, me sharing a few rules, children and adults demonstrating, and then everyone practicing. This morning we did it with scissors to prepare for a project we would be doing later in the day.

First Day of School

This afternoon we rotated through stations (blocks, kitchen, playdoh, drawing a picture, and choice). The kids did a really great job and had a lot of fun learning some of the fun things we have to do around the room!
